Steve Lawson

A lot of "old guys" here seem to like the idea of getting a nice pretty young wife. 🤣
What else is new? Do the single ladies also like the idea of tall, fit, billionaires?

I don't blame you. It's a reasonable (and not sinful) inclination. An age gap (like that of Lawson and his girlfriend which was 40+ years) obviously isn't inherently sinful, but it is generally incredibly impractical.

God gave me a lovely young virgin 26 years ago when I was 25.

Though I am theoretically open to the idea of a second one, it's very unlikely that the Lord is inclined to send me another. 😉
God orchestrated that marriage to Isaac. This means it is not only theoretically possible that God might choose an older or middle age man, for that 20 something year old woman. It very well may be God's intended will for Lawson to marry that young lady. Either way, age gap should not be a consideration when choosing someone to marry.

Honestly, I generally agree with you in principle.

It makes sense for a man desiring to have children to look for a fertile young woman. It also makes sense for a family minded young woman to seek a mature and financially stable man.

There is however a point somewhere that things start to get a little ridiculous from a practical viewpoint. I think Lawson (in his 70s) and this woman (in her 20s) were kinda there.

10 year age gap - great
20 year age gap - proceed with caution
30 year age gap - proceed only with extreme caution
45 year age gap - 🤣
Well, Isaac proceeded. No caution needed.

That last line is stupid beyond comprehension. Everything is a consideration when choosing to marry someone. Age isn't the only consideration, but it is one.

You cannot seriously compare a 40 year old Isaac marrying a 20(?) year old Rebecca with the 76 year old Lawson potentially marrying his ~30 year old former girlfriend.

Isaac lived to to 180. He lived a other 140 years after he got married. I am quite confident that our boy Lawson won't be living another 140 years. The olds of him making it to the ripe old age of 216 are pretty slim.

OK, let me rephrase that then. If God has led a 76 year old man to marry a 20 something year old woman, that is the only consideration that matters. Isaac did not hesitate to marry Rebecca. No one knows how old they will live. Obviously, if monogamy is the standard, Lawson dying before his children reach maturity would be a problem. If monogamy is not required by God, and this woman becomes Lawson's second wife, there are enough of us out here willing to marry his widows, that this should not be a major issue.

When husband can be father to bride, I get those.

But when husband can be grandfather to bride, that's little strange. To me this looks like gold digger case.

If Lawson is very rich, then marrying his widows get new meaning to "married for money".

Okay, but what is the Book, Chapter, and Verse on which you base this viewpoint?

According to Proverbs 19:14 a prudent wife is from the Lord. If God would save a young woman (say she's 19 years old) and gift you such a prudent wife, on what basis biblically would you turn her away? Mind you, I've never met you and dont know what you look like, so this may be moving into miraculous territory where a hot 19 year old would be attracted to you. ;)

I think you guys are getting silly.

If the Lord should choose to send me a hot 19 year old potential second wife then, I suppose I would proceed with extreme caution (and also great joy and gratitude to God) since that would be in the 30 year age gap category. 😉

I thought you were older than 49?

The bottom line is that it isn’t anyone else’s business who marries who.
Judging age gaps is a job for nosy people.

The bottom line is that Steve Lawson was preaching the false doctrine of "monogamy only", while running around with another woman. That means he was full of crap.

Since I’m not the Holy Spirit, I don’t find anything to concern myself with.
People choose who they want to follow, it’s their problem.

I disagree. It is incredibly practical if an older man wants children. And some young women love the idea of having babies to a mature, stable, wise man.
And a lot of those women, at least in my experience, want to be with someone 2-3x their age becuase they come from a effed up background and/or were SA victims.

Pass.

Well the whole monogamy only doctrine is full of manure, so that is nothing new.

I happen to know three women who were SA victims, who turned out alright, but I think it turned out that way, because the perpetrator ended up serving a very long sentence.

EDIT: Women in church are no different than other women, when it comes to how their emotions render them helpless, in the presence of a confident man. Some put up greater resistance than others, and some put up no resistance at all. Obviously, this young lady seems to fit the latter category.

Age-gap much...
Years ago in a certain church where I happened to be, was a 90 year old man who got married with a 21 year old woman. If he had had any gold, it would be natural to think she was a gold digger. But I don't think that was the case. Someone asked him if he thought they would have a very long life together. He demonstrated that he at least still had all his cognitive ability and didn't hesitate to reply "Well... if she dies she dies"

At 91 he had probably already outlived several wives, even if a monogamist.

I didn't say all SA victims, I said women who go for people 2-3x their age, in my experience, are SA victims (or drug addicts).
