It is often difficult with more than one.

I have seen glimpses of where the friendships and camaraderie between the wives can make the need of a deep focus by the husband on each individual less necessary.
I don’t have an opinion on how large the group can get and still be cohesive, I’m sure that it greatly depends on the individuals.

As much as men enjoy the fantasy, I am not that interested in fantasy beyond in passing.

I am not sure if this is in the same vein as that love languages stuff that seems to have saturated the culture but I have equation that I use with respect to woman and children.

Time + Effort = Love

Having talked to dozens of woman over time, having had long term relationships with a few of them and married a second, it has very much been my experience that crushes and infatuation can be fun but if they are unwilling to devote a lot of your limited time on earth devoted to trying to make their partner's life better or unwilling to get your proverbial hands dirty on their behalf...then maybe it is not the right paring.

So an isolated harem for entertainment and progeny is definitely not my style.
Besides, while dumb girls can be pretty obviously, being pretty sounds like a harem qualifier, being dumb would be a disqualifyer. I have a massive amount of content and I need someone smart to talk to and bounce ideas off of pretty much constantly.

In Ottoman style harem you use practically only money to made wives life better.

Plus, you would need smarter than average wives for such harem because she is raise kids mostly without your help and, research I have seen, say smarter people are more prosocial.

That is one of issues with the harem concept. Woman on their own are absolutely not qualified to raise children on their own...and before the ladies get bent at me, I was raised by a single mom and I have stats to prove that men get better outcomes as single parents than women, not remotely being hateful towards woman or denigrating their importance.
I have an unholy terror at the idea of having children who do not know there father and who's lives I have not been heavily involved in every single day of their lives.
Very different philosophy.
I could not have a harem of woman who I did not enjoy as a person and who i did not wish to spend loads of time with in a non recreational fashion.
Sticking to 3 for a max and 4 under only the most extreme circumstances.
Would have to buy a bloody hyperbaric chamber, doing my own prp therapy and stem cell extraction to keep up with that.

Even the idea is ugh unless it is spread out over decades so u am not trying to juggle it all at once .

Thinking again...I suppose up to four if quite spread out...woman and kids give us grumpy loaner type guys reason to achieve and be better and by extension stay young vastly longer.

Hmmm OK, who is the best biblical historian in the bunch? Who can help me prove my sudden theory that the lads in the early history of Christianity/pre Christianity who had the most wives and kids lived the longest...save for death by violence.

My guess is that most librarians are horrified by what they have been forced to facilitate, unless they are all same-sex attracted nowadays.

No doubt, but that is typical of unions.

Maybe I should not have used “most”.
In my day, librarians hadn’t needed college degrees and thus had avoided higher education brainwashing.
