China leads in tech development:

They're following the same path that Japan did. Japan began by copying British, European and US engineering. Back when I was a child, "Jap crap" was the general insult applied to stuff made in Japan. But by the time I was an adult, the best equipment was Japanese - electronics, cars etc. If you want a really reliable car, you buy a Toyota.
Just consider what the favourite reliable transport is in warzones around the world. Several decades ago it was a US Jeep or a British Landrover. Now it's the Toyota Landcruiser (or Hilux).
Still today, if you want a good small engine (for instance) you look for a genuine Honda made in Japan, and try to avoid a crappy Chinese clone. But that is changing, as the Chinese clones are now approaching Japanese quality.
A few years ago Chinese Great Wall utes came onto our market - and quickly gained a very bad reputation for poor quality workmanship. But only a few years later today, Chinese LDV vans and utes are everywhere on the road, have a good reputation, and are competing successfully head-to-head with the Japanese brands, Ford and Mercedes.
It's a predictable cycle. China will rise to the top and dominate for a while, then slip behind someone else. Their turn at the top will be the next decade or so.
