What Roth did find were happy people whose culture was vastly different from her own. Polygamy was not just allowed or encouraged, said Roth. It was a part of life. A man's first wife was chosen by his parents, his second was chosen by the first, and he had no choice in the matter until his third wife.
"I gave my neighbor a cantaloupe, and he was like, 'Oh, you want to be married?'" said Roth. "I was like, 'No, I gave you a cantaloupe.'"
Roth said she couldn't believe the women didn't rise up against their oppression. She said it took her a while to realize the women were happy.
The wives say they were shocked by the news that Mr Mbele wanted to marry them at once but add that they agreed because they love him.
Heartbreaking article. 60 years of pain created by false doctrine masquerading as 'righteousness.' Appalling. The blind in religious institutions create further blindness and destruction. Evil is called good and good is called evil. The little people are made to be confused and bitter. I yet have hope to one day see the KING of kings reign in righteousness - so come Lord Jesus! But while we wait for that event, many suffer religious abuse. The man and his family this article tells about was damaged by the error of his church re polygyny. The writer was left thinking homosexuality should be more generously accommodated so gays and lesbians don't have to endure uncharitable suffering as this man had to because of his parent's polygyny. The whole thing is skewed and just sad from beginning to end, but such error and confusion continues unabated to this day. What a need there is for the truth that we know to spread and thus dispel the darkness!
