Notre Dame Cathedral Burns

Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris burnt today. It sounds like it may be a total loss save the walls; we'll know more in the morning. Thankfully reports are that no one died in the blaze; no word on any injuries.

My feelings about Catholicism and human organizations aside, this is terrible news. This is one of the most famous examples of Christian architecture and probably the most recognizable. It is a major blow to beauty and European culture, a devastation to the French people, and a harbinger of things to come.

We don't officially know the cause yet. Early indications are they will blame renovations, even if that's not actually the truth. There has been a large spate of church desecrations and fires since the new year; at times as many as a dozen in a single week. Signs of coming persecution in Europe as it is given over to Christ hating populations and power groups.

Of course, officials have been 'mystified' as to who is responsible. But I'm not sure if that is because they don't know or can't say. Muslims aren't usually shy about claiming responsibility but maybe that's being buried. But there have also been anti-semetic desecrations which provides some hints.

Yes, I was watching this on my phone this afternoon. It does feel very symbolically prophetic of coming persecution. Sad to see something so historical be destroyed, but I'm glad that no one was injured. The conspiratorial corner of mind went to the same place as @rockfox, but, at least for now, I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt. Accidents do happen, and Occam's and Hanlon's Razors suggest no malice.

At any rate, last I'd heard, the stone structure is expected to survive, but the wooden structures and Windows are gone. The passage that came to my mind was 1 Corinthians 3:11-15:
11. For no one can lay any other foundation than that which has been laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12. But if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or stubble; 13. each man's work will be revealed. For the Day will declare it, because it is revealed in fire; and the fire itself will test what sort of work each man's work is. 14. If any man's work remains which he built on it, he will receive a reward. 15. If any man's work is burned, he will suffer loss, but he himself will be saved, but as through fire.

A few unintentional double-meanings in the reporting:
"Firefighters uncertain they can save the church"
"Crowds watching from the banks of the Seine" (pronounced very similarly to "sin")

Anyway, I heard two early eyewitnesses describe the initial smoke as an unusual sickly greenish/yellowish color. I'm thinking that might indicate copper but I'm not a chemist nor a firefeighter.

The Paris prosecutors' office says investigators are treating the blaze that destroyed part of Notre Dame as an accident for now.

The prosecutors' office said late Monday they have ruled out arson in Monday's fire, including possible terror-related motives for starting the blaze.

Prosecutors say Paris police will conduct an investigation into "involuntary destruction caused by fire." (AP)

It's still burning... How can they possibly rule out arson when they haven't even begun to investigate it yet?

Interesting week for this to happen.

Just saying

European authorities have a history of sweeping crimes under the rug if it would be politically incorrect to state who was responsible or the extent of the criminality. Given the symbolic importance of this landmark and the emotional connection the people of France and the world have to it, there will be a lot of pressure to not find that the fire was intentional.

Will another event happen this week to clog the news cycle ahead of the release of the Mueller Report?

The big events will be saved for the release of the declassified FISA reports.

I was thinking along the same lines. Doesn't seem like a far stretch with most of Europe teetering on the edge of civility. Didn't France just recently threaten their Prime Minister with the guillotine?

Report from the day before the burning detailing DAILY attacks on churches in France and Germany and the censorship thereof.

There's also a video of Neil Cavuto cutting off the Catholic League President mentioning the regular church burnings in France. It seems the Fox folks got their marching orders. Tucker on his show when talking about those other attacks had to repeatedly preface comments saying "we're not speculating but...".

Entirely coincidental I'm sure that this occurred exactly 1 month after the NZ mosque shooting and that Muslims on twitter are celebrating.

That alter Pietà is "Decent from the Cross" by Nicolas Coustou.

A number of religious relics were saved from the fire; although probably not the ones stored in the spire...

Denis and Genevieve are both the patron saints of Paris. Relics of theirs were placed atop the spire in 1935 by Archbishop Verdier to protect the church and its congregation from ill fortune.
The spire collapsed less than an hour after the fire began.

Oof... Sometimes I forget how superstitous Catholicism is.

This is moving, and is worth sharing (trigger warning: Canon in D)
