Music that makes you think of poly

This song is about a woman asking her husband about a woman he seems to be thinking about and working late with. His response is always....Nobody. Classic country song from back in the day.

Here is a song that made me think of poly.
It is an old Scottish ballad, and can be hard to understand, so I am including a link to lyrics, and a little history here.

Edit: This also goes along with the thread @rockfox started about Celtic Christianity being poly, linked to here.

Beautiful!

I know this is more of a woman's "liberation" song, but if you tweak it a little, it could be a liberation song from conventional society. Linda Ronstadt is an icon who sang folk, country, rock, pop, jazz/blues, and even mariachi!

You and I travel to the beat of a different drum
Oh can't you tell by the way I run
Every time you make eyes at me

You cry and moan and say it will work out
But honey child I've got my doubts
You can't see the forest for the trees

Oh don't get me wrong
It's not that I knock it
It's just that I am not in the market
For a boy who wants to love only me

Yes, and I ain't saying you ain't pretty
All I'm saying, I'm not ready
For any person, place or thing
To try and pull the reins in on me

So goodbye I'll be leaving
I see no sense in this crying and grieving
We'll both live a lot longer
If you live without me

Oh don't get me wrong
It's not that I knock it
It's just that I am not in the market
For a boy who wants to love only me

Yes, and I ain't saying you ain't pretty
All I'm saying, I'm not ready
For any person, place or thing
To try and pull the reins in on me

So goodbye I'll be leaving
I see no sense in this crying and grieving
We'll both live a lot longer
If you live without me

Ahh, yes!
Eighth grade all over again.

So good I had to drop post on 113restoration.com

Ever since I started writing polygyny stories, some songs I listen to sound poly to me now. For example, I used to watch a show called LEGO Friends (which is about 5 girls who are best friends), and The BFF Song in the show reminds me of polygyny now.

Lyrics:

When I'm alone on a dark and rainy night
It feels like I'm the only one alive.
If I get lost and have no where to go
There is one thing I'll always know.
You'll be around through ups and downs
If I call your name.
Best friends forever, forever and ever
No, no, no matter what, we stick together.
Best friends forever, forever and ever
Me and my girls, we're best friends forever.
BFF
Best friends
BFF
Forever
I keep your secrets
Cross my heart to die.
And if you're sad
It's all gonna be alright.
I'll be around through ups and downs
Just call my name.
Best friends forever, forever and ever
No, no, no matter what, we stick together.
Best friends forever, forever and ever
Me and my girls, we're best friends forever.
Sometimes we all get scared
Sometimes we all feel sad
That's when you need a friend.
BFF
BFF
Best friends forever, forever and ever
No, no, no matter what, we stick together.
Best friends forever, forever and ever
Me and my girls, we're best friends forever.
Me and my girls, we're best friends forever.

The only thing I don't like about this song is the "I keep your secrets cross my heart to die." That phase sounds really... creepy

Actually, @Mojo, that song was written by Michael Nesmith (of Monkees fame), and Linda Ronstadt changed it from a ode to avoiding commitment into one that would celebrate polygyny,

@Jeff Ray earlier mentioned Triad, by The Byrds. Actually, that song is probably my favorite all-time song about polygamy. It was written by David Crosby, and the Byrds (of whom he was a member), dragged their feet on including his original version on an album, so he got himself involved in the version sung by Grace Slick on Jefferson Airplane's 1968 album, Crown of Creation. It can be taken either way, given that it's sung by a woman -- and, because, when Crosby wrote it, he was sharing a woman with another man -- but there is no way to tell that by listening to it.

Another fun song that doesn't actually promote polygamy but always gets me in the right mood is, Did You Ever Have to Make up Your Mind, by the Lovin' Spoonful.

Another one that I heard recently from when I was younger. My thoughts were it didn't have to be the hardest thing.

98 degrees -hardest thing.

Here are the lyrics:
We both know that I shouldn't be here
This is wrong
And baby it's killing me, it's killing you
Both of us trying to be strong
I've got somewhere else to be
Promises to keep
Someone else who loves me
And trusts me fast asleep
I've made up my mind
There is no turning back
She's been good to me
And she deserves better than that
It's the hardest thing I'll ever have to do
To look you in the eye
And tell you I don't love you
It's the hardest thing I'll ever have to lie
To show no emotion when you start to cry
I can't let you see what you mean to me
When my hands are tied and my hearts not free
We're not meant to be
It's the hardest thing
I'll ever had to do
To turn around and walk away pretending I don't love you
I know that we'll meet again
Fate has a place and time
So you can get on with your life
I've got to be cruel to be kind
All my love I'll be sending
And you will never know
There can be no happy ending
It's the hardest thing I'll ever have to do
To look you in the eye
And tell you I don't love you
It's the hardest thing I'll ever have to lie
To show no emotion
When you start to cry
I can't let you see what you mean to me
When my hands are tied
And my hearts not free
We're not meant to be
It's the hardest thing I'll ever had to do
To turn around and walk away pretending I don't love you
I've made up my mind
There is no turning back
She's been good to me
And she deserves better than that
It's the hardest thing I'll ever have to do
To look you in the eye
And tell you I don't love you
It's the hardest thing I'll ever have to lie
To show no emotion
When you start to cry
I can't let you see
What you mean to me
When my hands are tied
And my hearts not free
We're not meant to be
It's the hardest thing I'll ever had to do

Doesn't specifically mention poly -- and probably has nothing to do with it -- but I thought about it the first time I heard it (playing it on the radio as a DJ), because of the enemy that stigma is and how it triangulates relationships into destruction:

"Upon a Thread," by Hipsway, 1986

What brought us together
Don't let it pull us apart

Soon there will be talk
Let the rumour start
Soon there will be talk
Let them start a kangaroo court

With a twitch upon a thread
We should never pull apart
With a twitch upon a thread
You rush straight to my heart

Soon there will be talk
Let the rumour start
Soon there will be talk
Let them start a kangaroo court

A brutal love lurking deep
A sadness that you're glad to keep
For this is the air that we breathe
This is the air that we share

Soon there will be talk
Let the rumour start
Soon there will be talk
Let them start a kangaroo court

Another song that reminds me of poly is Our Lips Are Sealed, by Hilary and Haylie Duff. Me and my family were listening to this in the car once, and my mind went like "Oh, this would be perfect for polygyny!" Me and my parents love this song, and I even made a polygyny music video with it.

[Haylie:]
Can you hear them?
They talk about us.

[Hilary:]
Telling lies
Well, that's no surprise.

[Hayls:]
Can you see them?
See right through them.

[Hil:]
They have no shield
No Secrets to reveal.

[Chorus:]
[Both:]

It doesn't matter what they say.
In the jealous games people play.
Hey, Hey, Hey.
Our Lips Are Sealed.

[Hayls:]
There's a weapon.
Which we must use.

[Hil:]
In our defense.
Silence.

[Hayls:]
Spreading Rumors
So far from true.

[Hil:]
Dragged up from the underworld.
Just like some precious pearl.

[Back to Chorus]

[Hil:]
Pay no mind to what they say
It doesn't matter anyway.
Our Lips Are Sealed.

[Hil:]
Hush my darlin'.

[Hayls:]
Don't you cry.

[Hil:]
Cryin' angel.

[Hayls:]
Forget their lies.

[Back to the top, stop before Hil's part and after the Chorus]

[Both:]
Pay no mind to what they say.

[Both:]
It doesn't matter anyway. Hey, Hey, Hey.

[Repeat:]
Our Lips Are Sealed [3x]

Extra points for poly with twins!

Was just listening to a song that, ironically, will now always remind me of poly: Laughing, by The Guess Who:

I should laugh, but I cry
Because your love has passed me by
You took me by surprise
You didn't realize but I was waiting

Time goes slowly, but carries on
And now the best years have come and gone
You took me by surprise
I didn't realize that you were laughing

Laughing, 'cause you're doin' it to me
Laughing, it ain't the way it should be
You took away everything I had
You put the hurt on me

Laughing, 'cause you're doin' it to me
Laughing, it ain't the way it should be
You took away everything I had
You put the hurt on me

I go alone now, calling your name
After losing at the game
You took me by surprise
I didn't realize that you were laughing

Time goes slowly, but carries on
And now the best years
The best years have come and gone
You took me by surprise
I didn't realize that you were laughing

Laughing, 'cause you're doin' it to me
Laughing, it ain't the way it should be
You took away everything I had
You put the hurt on me

Laughing, 'cause you're doin' it to me
Laughing, it ain't the way it should be
You took away everything I had
You put the hurt on me

Laughing, ha ha ha ha ha ha
Laughing, ha ha ha ha ha ha
Laughing, what, you laughing at me?
Laughing, what, you laughing at me?

Laughing, oh, what you do on the weekend?
Laughing, I wanna look when you're laughing
Laughing, I wanna look when you're laughing
Laughing

Some of the lyrics to this one make you think maybe she was a first wife....maybe a mistress? Sad song.
