Is it really this bad?

There have been a number of good references mentioned in the previous posts, but one that is outstanding is Christina Hoff Sommers' The War Against Boys. I read it about 12 years ago, and she is spot on. I believe she has updated her research and published a revised edition. It is a somewhat long read, but well written and documented, and worth your time.
