Zahra Baker's stepmother charged with bigamy

Zahra Baker was an Australian girl killed and dismembered in North Carolina.

A couple of interesting points from this case:

1. People still get charged with bigamy, it is active legislation not a anachronism.

2. The lady is being charged with bigamy because she was still married to her first husband when she married the second (normally it is the man that gets charged with this sort of stuff).

3. The events happened a few years ago yet authorities still decided to proceed with the charge of bigamy.

4. The second husband said he met his wife through the internet and had no idea she was married.

Food for thought in the "getting to know people over time" and "real people versue internet people" debates.

I think it's like a lot of charges-they will drag it out if they want to charge you with something and nothing else leaps to the forefront. It's a matter of 'find something to charge her with so we can keep her here for a while till we find something better." It's ammunition.
