Before my husband and I embarked on the plural marriage "thing," what seemed to stand out most to us was Ruth's need for TIME: Time for childcare, time to sleep, time to get chores accomplished and to run errands. And of course, time for childcare. That was the biggest issue right there. Being a single parent of five unruly children, and working full time, she desperately needed someone to help her supervise the children while she was working at night and sleeping during the day. School holidays and vacations just torture her, because she cannot get any sleep at all.
The second thing that stood out to us was the children's need for a positive example of a well-functioning family. They have not had many-- if any at all-- positive examples of how a family should cooperate and function together. They desperately need a father, one who will be steady and positive, and love them unconditionally. One who will be firm when they need discipline, without going mental and beating the living tar out of them. A father who will talk to them about why they were disciplined, and assure them that they are still loved very much.
So in summary, the thing that you can offer that would be of greatest benefit to single mothers is TIME AND LOVE.
