The Purpose-Driven Brain

Actually, Andrew, the Turner Tribe is into neuroplasticity,(the physiology of renewing our minds,) big time. We are making a point of going through Dr. Caroline Leaf's 13 week broadcast series, and then are going to dive in to "Who Switched Off My Brain." I think it is one of the most hopeful aspects of the gospel that there is, i.e., that you can literally grow a new brain, and overcome anything the enemy has sent your way. We have a long way to go, but we're on our way....

Other helpful folks are Bob Samara, who is a 'Nam vet who used neuroplasticity to overcome some wicked PTSD, and Dr. Paul Pearsall, who did extensive research on Holocaust survivors-turned-thrivers who came out of the experience as better people.

Man, what a joy it is to know there are others who see being transformed by the renewing of your mind on such an intense level!

Shalom to you and yours...

As a PS, I read the article and liked it, except for the following:

Conceivably, researchers some day could use these data to reproduce the stress resistance of eudaimonists in a pill. "We already can drug those fight-or-flight systems pretty well," Cole says. "We could let people feel threat and distress all they want, but then protect them from the adverse biological consequences of that." - See more at: http://dana.org/News/Can_A_Purpose-Driv ... wiPFC.dpuf

The idea of trying to put "purpose-full-ness" into a pill is a hair tearer to me. But, that is our culture these days.

Agreed. I almost called that out in the first post. Unbelievable the way everything you could do naturally and inexpensively gets turned into a patented pharmaceutical these days, in spite of the evidence contra re side effects, etc. What a weird irony that evidence that having a purpose in your life is good for you gets turned into a quest for a pill for people without purpose.

Skip that part, though, and the rest of the article is very encouraging!! 8-)

Our family is profoundly aware of neuroplasticity as well. It made for an excellent presentation with biblical and scientific support at a local public speaking event. Response to the concept was near overwhelming. Though no one was previously familiar, all present made mention of a change in view upon hearing the speech. Psalm 139:14
