Secular Article Dealing with Polygamy

This is a very long, but extremely well written article from The Atlantic Monthly written by a feminist. She is basically examining the world and trying t figure out how her life ended up at this point, nearly 40, childless and single. The parts that directly deal with polygamy are somewhere in the middle but the article is one gigantic research project in facts, figures and studies that ultimately support patriarchy and polygyny.

It would be great if someone would read this and comment on it. It may have been posted here before but if so I missed it.

First off, wow, that is a long article! :D

While totally secular in nature, there is some really telling information given which certainly supports, in some cases, patriarchy and (more so) polygyny.

Two things that stuck out to me most were (1) the author's statements about the differences in cultures where women outnumber or outclass the men, and how that actually works against the women rather than for them. (2) The author's statement about how the raising of children is easier in a multi-woman environment. I have often thought this myself. It makes me think of a "Proverbs 31 Woman" - who is likely a woman who is likely an example of a successful polygynous relationship.

Interesting article. I may re-read it again when I can take more time with it. I'll see if I can set aside half a day. :D

Definitely needs a Hal day and multiple readings, but I was struck by the exact same thought. I know feminism is bad for women but I was shocked that they can quantify it, study it and label it, but still not accept it.

Thank you for taking the time to read that.

I had a few minutes so started scrolling, took over half an hour to read... It's a book, not an article!

It's just sad. So much information about how stuffed up society is, how the way demographics, feminism, and sexual "liberation" have ruined people's chances for settled commitment. And then ends up discussing how these lonely women might be able to band together to get the family support that they don't get from traditional family / clan structures from each other instead.

It's particularly sad reading about the physical sexual relationships had by young people that lack love and don't lead to the commitment they are really looking for - yet they keep doing it as society says that's what you do.

It really shows that polygamy has potentially a massive role to fill in providing a solution at least for some people in society today.

Samuel had a good point. The segment with the young women who were barely out of high school and already bored with sex and never actually had a boyfriend ( not that I endorse modern dating, but so much sex you're bored with it AND never been in modern version of a long term relationship is stunning) is heartbreaking.
