legislation to get the state government out of marriage

"Idaho state Sen. Steve Vick says one U.S. city’s efforts to force a Christian wedding chapel to perform homosexual marriages in his state is a blatant violation of the Constitution, and he is seriously considering legislation to get the state government out of marriage entirely because he fears churches will be the next target in the aggressive homosexual agenda."

Sounds good to me. I've thought for a long time that the gov should stay out of it. I couldn't find any mention on non-Christian sites unfortunately.

If this pushes through, sir, it sure will be chalked under "God works in mysterious ways." And I know He does.

I don't think it will happen. Not to be a downer but the U.S. Supreme Court is overturning gay marriage bans and I just don't forsees them going the opposite way suddenly.

This wouldn't be down to the court, it's a way of sidestepping the court entirely. And it's an excellent move.

But any church can already do this. Just choose not to be official marriage celebrants. You can do "weddings" but officially they're just religious ceremonies with nothing to do with the state, so the state has no jurisdiction over them. If a couple want to have their marriage registered they can go to the registry office themselves and sort that out separate to the church. This is the system that already operates in many countries in Europe and has done for centuries. So no church need be forced to do gay marriages, they can easily avoid it if they just think about it beforehand - the problem is that most people are so tied up with current tradition they aren't willing to reconsider it at all.
