Debate on Polygyny

There is an interesting debate going on over the statement that polygyny should be legal. Honestly, I got frustrated reading the replies and didn't go very deep, but I thought there might be some here who would like to read through and participate.

Bah! Read the first page only.

What's that about casting pearls before swine?

I'll keep my pearls. Obviously, I'm not literally calling them swine per-se, but no one there seems interested in listening unless there's already agreement.

I really don't understand the automatic response that polygamy/polygyny equates to female slavery or pedophilia. It's Pavlovian conditioning. Do these people truly think that there are no happy polygamists? That none desire underage girls? That none treat their women with respect and love? Do they truly not realize that every single disgusting thing that they automatically associate with polygamy is present in every single type of domestic household, including those that are single?

It just baffles me to no end.

Blanket statements like this often seem to be used when the person using them has no other good argument.

While I tend to agree with you, I also wonder if we should be using debates like this to share the truth. The biggest challenges, as I see it, is the frustration we might experience dealing with the ignorant, and the possibility we will find ourselves pulled into the mud (i.e. play with pigs and you will soon smell like pigs). Of course, the obvious that is going without being said is the possibility it will make no difference at all, but what if it does?

Hello.

That (link) was kinda boring, actually. :D

For every anti-poly statement there, we can provide scriptural, historical, traditional, psychological, anthropological, etc., "proof" that negates them. But it doesn't matter. Some folks just doesn't want to leave their "comfort" zones, even if it meant wallowing in deception.

Of course, we still have to look for that one lost sheep though but its going to be tough for the person doing the looking. That's why maybe we need His help if we do His work?

For me though, there are other ways to find lost sheep such as poly-practicing tribes who remain outside of the body of Christ because mainstream Christianity brands them as pagans. Or fellows who currently maintains 2 or more families who shun the church because they are adulterers and sinners.

I suppose you're right, aineo. I very well could have posted what I stated here in that discussion. Maybe that would have triggered at least one person's synapse to cascade into a break through. Most of us are guilty of that very same thing before we realized that we had been misled by the filtered viewpoint of mainstream theology.
