Normally discussed in sermons as "Counting the Cost of becoming a disciple" however I am going to focus on the tower part:
“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’
Three Foundations for a Strong Tower:
Physical:
. Health is sound (of course no one knows for sure, however you need to go into this venture from a position of strength not weakness)
. Temperament is even, not prone to anger, balanced
. Surplus time available
Spiritual
. Mature disciple, not easily blown off course by new doctrines (like biblical marriage some might say )
. Confident in the biblical justification for your lifestyle
. Leadership of your family established
Financial
. Housing adequate for additional wives and children, in line with surrounding community standards
. Income is showing a surplus sufficient to cover additional wives and children, funds are accumulating not diminishing.
. Reserves for unexpected situations, such as an interuption in income or surprise medical expenses, bearing in mind your 1 Timothy 5:8 responsibility.
Planning to build a strong tower makes it more likely that you will succeed, and instead of mocking others may say "Look at that fellow's tower, it is not so bad after all, maybe I should build one too, or at least not throw rocks at it".
